"Red-Headed Devils at Night Have No Mercy"

Jerry De La Cruz

In 1986, a unique art leasing program developed by the City of Denver placed local art throughout Denver's City and County Building.  This eight-foot tall painting of mine was included in the program.  It immediately caused a furor from visitors when it was placed outside a courtroom used for divorce proceedings.  Complaints were that the painting's looming presence and obvious imagery were offensive to those attending proceedings in the courtroom.  According to one reporter, it was the possible interpretations of the floating cherry that caused the most consternation as to the possible deleterious effect of this painting on raw divorcees.  The painting was moved to another part of the building.
